Blast From the Past

What I Learn …

A Note
By Emma Muslimah

I was a student five years ago in 2005. A student, from grade school to university, who often talked about how bad that teacher was, what a scary teacher she was, how boring that lecturer was and what so ever interesting things that can be the object of our mockery. But look at me now? I’m a teacher. I often don’t believe it: ‘who, me?! A teacher?!’ I even never dream about it. Here I am, teaching the students, all of wonderful and even unique students. But life goes on. I take it as a gift. I know everything happens for reason. So, I decided to go for it. I teach. During these 5 years of teaching, I learn a lot of things, a host of valuable lessons in the real class. Mostly the students give me these lessons, to be a better person I am.
I learn how to be patient when I have to explain the lesson over and over again, for the students haven’t understood it yet.
I learn how to smile when the students talk enthusiastically about their boyfriends/girlfriends while I am teaching.
I learn how to behave, for I had colored my hair while the students could imitate my weird act.
I learn how to speak orderly when explaining the lesson, for I have to be a good speech model for the students.
I learn how to praise, a teacher who is fond of praising her students because of answering one simple question correctly.
I learn how to grow up, for a teacher is responsible to educate students to be good people.
I learn how to understand, for the teenage life is very complicated and it takes more than brain to understand them.
I learn how to love a textbook, for I have to prepare the lesson before I do teaching.
I learn how to be friendly, for it is easier to socialize with the students if they consider the teachers their friends.
I learn how to be a good listener, for the students always tell the story of their amazing life.
I learn how to appreciate, for it is very difficult to stop the students cheating during the test.
I learn to keep in touch with technology, for the students consider FS is out of date than FB.
I learn to be a nice mother, for the students can be the reflection of my daughter in the future.
I learn how to keep on fighting, for being a teacher is not the end of the world though it is, people said, poorly paid. ^_^
